“The Little Brown Dog”
An outstanding “first” Field Spaniel, Clara produced one litter of 8 (scroll down to see them) all of whom became Champions and included the first OTCH in breed history. Bred by Win McCann (Pickwick), Clara was our introduction to the dog show world in general and Field Spaniels in particular. Bringing her home, after a 2 year wait, in June 1984, was the beginning of our association with Field Spaniels.
Patient with our initial attempts at grooming , which resulted in some interesting haircuts, she was equally as patient and resilient with our initial attempts at training a high scoring obedience competitor at a time when those “in the know” said it was impossible to train a Field Spaniel to competition obedience level scores. Affectionately known as “the little brown dog”, she set numerous obedience competition records, earned the first Gaines tournament placement for Field Spaniels and was our first Utility Dog titlist—ever! She left us late in September 1996. We were do fortunate to have been owned by her and are delighted to see glimpses of her in our current dogs. Every Calico Field Spaniel traces back to this great lady. |
