Things You Can Do

Training is highly recommended for a Field Spaniel, whether you and your dog go through a basic puppy kindergarten class or on to more advanced training for “performance events.” At Calico, although we show our dogs in conformation, “Our Show Dogs Work!” and performance events are our passion.

There are many places you can try out any of these activities. However, ALL Field Spaniel puppies should go to a basic obedience or household manners class. There are many reasons to take the time to do this, but the best reason is that you want your Field Spaniel to become a great member of your family and one that you will enjoy for years into the future. Basic puppy manners classes will help you learn to communicate consistently and fairly with your puppy, solve minor behavioral problems that may develop, and give you the knowledge to be able to continue working with your puppy to shape the behaviors desirable for your home situation.

AGILITY
This performance event has become an extremely popular activity for both Field Spaniels and owners alike, and is an event growing in popularity. In agility, dogs negotiate an obstacle course that may include tunnels and jumps and other obstacles depending on the class entered. It is an event that requires training, conditioning (for both dog and handler!), concentration, and teamwork.

Two types of agility classes are offered, each with a progressively more difficult level of performance. One type of agility is the “Standard” class. The other is “Jumpers With Weaves”.

Each type also may be initially achievable at the “Preferred” level which involves lower jump height and allows for additional time to complete the course.

A number of titles may be earned in competition, with the highest level of achievement known as the MACH which stands for Master Agility Champion.

OBEDIENCE

This is where most of the Calico Field Spaniels start toward performance competition. Obedience training gives a solid foundation for communicating with your Field Spaniel so that your dog may comply with commands such as “Come,” “Sit,” “Down,” and so forth. Obedience competition was originally envisioned as a way for purebred dogs to show their general usefulness to humans. Since the inception of obedience competition in the AKC show rings, the sport has grown and is now a major past time for many dog fanciers.

RALLY

Rally is a relatively new sport in which you may compete with your Field Spaniel. There are 3 levels of Rally competition, from Rally Novice through Rally Advanced Excellent. In a Rally event, the dog and handler complete a course at their own pace, from one station to the next. Each station has a sign with instructions regarding a skill that is to be performed. Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience and perfect heel position is not required. In addition, you are allowed to talk to your dog during a Rally course; in fact— talking is encouraged. Harsh commands and/or corrections are penalized in the scoring.

HUNTING

As a member of the “Sporting Group,” the Field Spaniel is a flushing dog. This means that the Field Spaniel uses his or her nose to find birds, and subsequently rousts the birds up into the air (flushes the bird) so the the hunter can readily fire. Then the Field Spaniel will retrieve the bird, from land or water, and bring it back.

While the Field Spaniel is not eligible to run in Field Trials, the breed is eligible for AKC Hunt Tests. The parent club (Field Spaniel Society of America, Inc.) also offers a working dog certificate program. However, there are many Field Spaniels who work routinely in hunting with their owners and could care less about a title so long as their Field Spaniel does the job they require.

And, an on-line publication devoted to hunting spaniels is the Spaniel Journal which is loaded with great articles.

Calico Field Spaniels have proven their talents in the field by earning several Master Hunters (MH) in breed history.

CONFORMATION

The purpose of conformation showing is to demonstrate how closely a dog approaches the “ideal” or theoretically perfect specimen of a Field Spaniel. Dogs are judged on the basis of a breed standard. The standard accounts for the intended purpose of the breed (such as for the Field Spaniel is performing the work of hunting) while considering the physical attributes required for the dog to do the job. In addition, the particular physical attributes which make up what fanciers call “type” are detailed in the breed standard. It is generally accepted that only dogs who closely resemble the ideal specimen of the breed should be used in breeding future generations. The Bench Championship (CH) title is conferred on dogs who compete and earn points by defeating other Field Spaniels on the basis of how closely a particular judge feels the dog approaches the breed standard.

There is also room for the kids in conformation show events: Junior Showmanship is an ideal way for children to become involved in the sport of purebred dogs.

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP

There is also room for the kids in conformation show events: Junior Showmanship is an ideal way for children to become involved in the sport of purebred dogs. Judging is different than for conformation point events in that the awards are based on how well the Junior Handler presents the dog rather than on how closely the dog approaches the ideal specimen of the breed.
